The Sun stays above the horizon for 24 continuous hours at least once per year; this is also true within the Arctic Circle, the Antarctic Circle's counterpart in the Northern Hemisphere.

These are IMAGINARY LINES known as the FIVE CIRCLES OF LATITUDE:

  • Arctic Circle (66°33′50.9″ N)

  • Tropic of Cancer (23°26′09.1″ N)

  • Equator (0° latitude)

  • Tropic of Capricorn (23°26′09.1″ S)

  • Antarctic Circle (66°33′50.9″ S)

The "tropics" are where the noontime sun can be directly overhead at some time in the year.

The imaginary lines just tell you what the sun does in that location.
