But what do you think about the mental symbols? The alchemical works as the dissolution and reformation of ego, the hero’s journey, the “sky-father/earth-mother” idea that shows up everywhere, the active-masculine-yang / passive-feminine-yin dichotomy that shows up everywhere, the idea of “as above so below”, that our world is an imperfect mirror of a divine world, and other things along those lines? Do you also see those as foisted upon us?

If they are purely virtual, then they are not different from symbols and could be acquired or eliminated with will.

I don't quite get what you mean under "mental symbol". Some patterns like "American dream" or "Communist future" that was created in people minds or something else. In the first case they are not any different from regular symbols - they work only for those who for whatever reason believe in them. As soon as one disappointed, it stops work.
