You probably already know about these balloons NASA supposedly used just for testing. So your communication was with a satellite hanging from a balloon. Your just believed it was with a satellite in space.
100km wifi link would be impossible on the globe, like sonar. Subs couldn't play war games because it would easy to hide behind a curve a several kilometers away and pop up to torpedo a sub.
