Basically, West is more or less good in steel, aluminium and plastics(yet), but complete losers in most other areas, from simple titanium to complex metal-ceramic composites. Remember that forever problems with heat shield tiles on Space Shuttles? You can't make working hypersonics from steel, aluminium and plastics.
