Aether isn't an element, but was considered the medium in which elements exist, as we do now with the word 'space', so it was removed. Space as empty vacuum or 'nothing' as opposed to aether as field of potential for those elements.
One is more accurate than the other. Space loses the debate when discussed by higher intellects with an accurate understanding of the historic debate coupled with modern discoveries.
Even Einstein admitted spacetime was the "ether of Relativity". Modern relativists are just confused lackeys and sycophants, so they claim Einstein "did away with" the ether.
