Trump is a closet truther, and has been for a very long time. The problem isn't learning the truth, it's communicating it to the public in such a manner that they will discard what they already "know" and accept the real truth.
What's happening with this and other issues is that Trump is trying to get people to accept him as their "authority" who will tell them the truth. He feeds it out slowly to sway them, slow enough so that the current "authorities" of the media don't want to "Streisand" it.
