Made this list from an instagram short, several weeks ago where they just talked about the scare score, and named the films. I look up each one, get an imdb link for each. I don't do trailers though because it spoils too much. Gradually going through these in recent weeks. Only spare time is during meals and resume next one.
Lately I checked out the Insidious series. Like, you'll get one in this list and then you check out the others. So, the smile series, too.
Let me get that text file of the list.
"Scare score" = Heart Rate (BPM) + Stress (HRV) heart rate variant.

Up to Host (2020) and they had some lines about the "why", they use candles.
"Go ahead and light your candles. Yep. The candle is going to be our guiding focus. and it's going to encourage the spirit. It will give them almost a beacon to come towards."
This is like the "Talk to Me (2022)", where it's really basic, with the artifact but they also use a candle.
Betcha if I'd check the Insidious stuff, they'd be using candles during. That series, they go on the other side. Almost like dreamland, but probably more like when somebody dies in the hospital and comes back. The near death expericence stuff. Lots of research into that in the 1970's. They'll tell you things they saw in other rooms, you can verify. Like how are they doing that, if it's bogus.
But yeah.. just the "candle".. I wonder if that goes through, somehow, to this other realm. Why would it be doing that.. "fire".
You almost don't wanna be using candles in your place, cause it might bring up who knows what.
Also.. "churches" and the candles, eh.
I don't use candles though.. cause of the fire hazard. Falling asleep.
People always talk about if compact, fluorescent lights, fluorescent lights, LED lights, blue lighting, etc. are not good for you.
Seems using fire to see in the dark has a long history of not being harmful.
I mean, obviously the fire is dangerous, But using a couple of candles after dark to read a book… can’t be that bad.
Look out for moths, though.
