Pure speculation. Maybe they can make the battery overheat, but that will not produce a perfectly syncronize pop. Also it will give warnings as it gets hotter.
The pagers explosion was certainly simultaneous. So I think the pagers did have explosives on them.
For the explosions that happened the next day and were less damaging I think they may have used an ability to actually heat up the batteries of electronic devices at a distance.
Bet they have cellphones that do this too
