To get a patent you need only pay patent fee and prepare papers according to standard. That's all. You don't need your "invention" be real at all. If you have few thousand dollars you could trash, you could easily get a patent on magic wand made from polypropilene or voulcano creating apparatus based on cordless drill. Just pay fee and fill papers.
Patent absolutely does not mean that device described working as described, could be built or even implementable at all. Nobody in patent office cares if it exist or could be built. Only thing they care about is thar there is no such thing in previous patents and fee you paid and that's all.
I don't know where from that stupid belief that if something is patented it was for sure somehow implemented and working. Times when that was the case ended in the very beginning of patent system. Patent office needs money, not proofs of concept or real things. You have to be completly ignorant about how patent system really works and what it is, to use a patent as a proof of anything.
Mostly they used either for patent trolling when some corporation patent something obvious nobody even account as an invention, either for pleasing self-importance, either to allow corporations to harvest any useful inventions for cheap.

All that bullshit about some astonishing invention that was banned by government are bullshit. Unlike some celebrity rumors, inventions could not be "closed" or "banned" once they were proven replicateable. Even if invention completely erased along with inventor, somebody else will inevitably reinvent it soon. Hiding patents could not prevent it.
Meaning you can take the payoff or disappear.
Science and engineering does not work like that. Every inventor use existing knowledge as a foundation. It is inevitable that someone else will reinvent same thing if foundation is ready for such invention.
Every single story about "free energy" and bought/deceased inventor I know shows obvious signs of scam. Every single dude who claimed something like, never even thought about publishing full and exact instructions on how to replicate his "great invention". This is how I know you don't live on the coast. Hurricane's mostly cause structural damage and are expensive. They are surprisingly not deadly due to our building codes and early warnings.
