Well, I look at it this way, this spiritual battle in a fallen world has been going on for a long time. Sometimes evil is ascendant, sometime order has a solid run. Still, if they wanted to do the mass kill off, why wait until 2030 when it's been one of their goals since the environmental movement went off the rails in the 1970s.
