I am not sure what the news is trying to do here. But I have "the sun", the "guardian", "breitbart" I believe and "Nypost" and others that also do celeb / pop type stories talking about people 'accidentally stealing' or pretending to accidentally steal
Listen, retailers. If you didn't want people to Screw up occasionally and accidentally not scan something, then you should not have installed self-checkout
Self-checkout is about TRUST. Trusting your customers and NOT assuming BAD INTENTIONS of them.
If you have a customer who has a 96-99% accuracy rate, you would do well to leave them the fort alone. Because the moment you complain or come to them accusatorily over a "theft", they are going to be SO ANGRY that they will not go back to your store and they will NOT use your self - checkout again.
SO then as this continues, fewer and fewer people will use self-checkout
Congrats. You changed your ENTIRE WORKING PROCEDURES only to alienate your customers fundamenally. Now they will buy less from you. And they will go back to JAMMING UP YOUR NON SELF LANES again,
forcing you to have to pay for more employees (again)....
the whole point of self checkout was to replace four to six employees with ONE employee (the self-checkout "overwatch")
My suggestion to retailers is Get a Better Overwatch. Or shut the fuck up and deal with self-checkout being a loss-prevention difficulty you'll just have to overcome

In just the last month
Self checkouts increase theft by about 10% of retail sales, when I studied it in 2015.
The world has changed dramatically since that year. Kinda surprising to hear how low it was.
