You're not going to like my solution. But, dairy causes mucus. I haven't needed strong cold or allergy meds in over a decade because I went vegan. I try to get my kids to leave dairy alone when they get congested.
I tried not to get gross. But, when you stop eating dairy, your mucus is watery. Watery mucus is very different than gel like snot that makes people so uncomfortable.
I would also like to point out that those of us old enough to remember before those items required an ID, the products worked better / different. The few ruined it for the many.
I think it's all bullshit about the shake and bake/ bathtub speed. I mean, it certainly exists, but nobody is trying to ingest that caustic shit except in emergencies. They took it off the market as it was because of exactly the reason you say. Because it worked. Now there is a half-assed garbage product in its place.
What if the new formulation is BETTER for the speed? No clue, but wouldn't put it past them for a second.
Okay, that worked wonders on my wife's congestion and my son's congestion a few days later. Now my son is hacking like crazy. Any more pearls of wisdom on how to kill or shorten the life of a cough?
Kinda sad that I have to come to these forums to get advice that actually works.
Congestion could be caused by a medical issue like impacted wisdom teeth, nasal polyps, infections, allergies, etc.
That being said, I've found some relief that does not rely on decongestants or prescriptions.
A sinus rinse of salt water can help clear out the crud that won't drain. You can rinse all you want safely. I've gone as frequent as hourly during severe colds.
Quercetin seems to have a positive effect. I think it might be an anti inflammatory. After I started taking it during COVID and found that I was able to significantly cut back on my anti histamine intake and congestion improved significantly.
NAC seems to help, too. My family developed a cough that just would not go away. Three days of NAC and my cough was gone and my ears were popping like crazy. Started giving NAC to the rest of the family and their cough was gone in a couple of days, as well. NAC is well documented to help with mucus in the lungs, so I'm not surprised that it can also help with congestion in the sinuses.
Regarding actually effective decongestants, the best OTC option right now seems to be 12 hour extended release pseudoephedrine. One pill will generally cover me for 24 hours, while the normal stuff I'm counting down to 4 hours so I can take more. If I take it more often I develop sleep issues. It also seems to become less effective over time. So I try alternate remedies above first and generally try not to take it more than 3 days in a row.
I think I'll pick up some potassium and see if that affects me, as well. I'm generally well hydrated and often eat potassium rich foods. But it's worth a few bucks to give it a try.
My wife has been going crazy from a congested head. She was desperate enough to want to try some pharma options, but knew they didn't actually do anything to help. I sent her this link and she tried your advice. The effects were almost immediate. Her sinuses drained out and she could breathe through her nose again.
I can't believe it's this simple. I've been complaining for years that there is no cure for the common cold in the 21st century. The lack of viable treatments for the symptoms is a testament to the joke that modern medicine has become. I used to rage about modern medicine when I couldn't find anything to help the symptoms when my son was younger. I wish I would have known about this back then.
Potassium can make your heart stop. I'm glad you mentioned something or some people might use too much

You can just eat potassium rich foods. Tiger Nuts for example.
Really, ANY feline nuts work. 🤣😂🤣
Ignoring you idiocy. Tiger Nuts arent nuts, they are roots.

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly. It's a song about pharma
It's not always that simple.
