I've gone through two rounds of layoffs at my company. both times people just woke up one day to find out that they couldn't log in, all their meetings were canceled, and they basically found out from their coworkers before they found out from their bosses that they were being laid off. Sorry to hear that from you. Or may be not. IDK, but may be that was not the best place to work if they do that shit with their employees? And something tell me that things could unwind much worse for those who kept that job.
Get into local government somewhere. Honestly, there is a need for good facilities managers and engineers. The pay is decent, and the benefits are okay, depending on the state.

Any thoughts on what direction to go if that occurs? I don't need the answer, just asking
