if you really think dying a "hero" is anyone's motivation for going out guns blazing in an act of self-defense in a world gone mad, you're sorely mistaken. You have to realize what you can and can't control in this world, and then act accordingly. We can't control how tyrannical those in power get. When the tyranny reaches a boiling point, if the only thing I can control is turning my house into a SWAT team orphan factory, then so be it. We all die, and I choose to die on my feet.
In the mean time, there's a lot you can do to reduce your dependency on the system, and given how panicky you appear to be, you haven't done any work towards that. When you don't need the system to survive, you sleep pretty well at night.

It has nothing to do with being a hero, and it really doesn't matter what you want. You can only control a tiny sliver of your existence, and making the choice to remain unarmed is your decision to give up a large part of that tiny sliver.
We're all going to die- you may as well do it on your own terms. Cowering away while the powers that be continue to ruin your life is no way to live.
