I have many musings on the subject, but the point is that every human that has existed before our modern "space age" is believed to be wrong about what mars is. I am merely saying that we still are today, and for the same reasons as then.

I am leaning toward simulation
Whether a simulation or not is irrelevant. It is real to us in any case, and objective reality demonstrably exists and is the same for everyone.

Because the (real) people who simulated the "picture from mars" made a mistake.

Bong rips and bad tv take their toll. There are no "stargates" in reality. Only on tv. Exactly as it is with mars the rodenberrian "planet", and for the same reasons. Again, whether this is a simulation or not is irrelevant. This reality exists, and it has fixed/immutable rules that are demonstrable to/for all.
