It's more or less true. The actual story was more complicated. Putitout basically shut down the site. I think he had done with all the hassle of trying to run and keep alive a free speech platform. There was also an issue of funding. Running these sites is expensive. But I believe a 3rd party contributed a fair sum of money to keep the site 'alive'. But I think it was basically a poison pill. I believe the money came with strings attached (maybe moderation) but this I think ultimately contributed to the demise of the site.
But most the user base itself just migrated to a new home, which is voat.xyz or later rebranded to talk.lol, some probably ended on poal.co
The site “moving” means that whoever owned it retained ownership. The other sites are just clones.
The site really was the community, and the community just moved. But yeah I get your point. Putitout while technically the owner was barely present in the last year before he shut it down.
