Most stills in Russia are DIY, along with a small market of ready-to-use stills. Usually people who into making own alcohol prefer to build their own systems from standard parts with everything adjustable to achieve best possible quality. There is a big community in internet about making shine and even some opensource software for Arduinos and BluePills based controllers for stills.
In Russia we have no any restrictions on making shine, pure alcohol and all that wisky, brandy and other strong drinks at al, as long as you don't sell it. Wine, beer and other stuff also not restricted for personal use.
Many people have stills and making strong alcohol drinks as hobby. I tried to make a shine too, but to make a tasty thing it is not as easy as you might think. Too many nuances and things to take into account. If you are not interested in process, it is easier to take shine from a friend or just buy factory drinks.
So it is strange for me that in US exists any market for stills when even in Russia without restrictions most people prefer to build DIY stills, not buy them.
If there is a restrictions about shine, you definitely have to go underground. If you go underground, it is not very wise to buy a factory still, easier and safer to build it yourself and have full control over the whole process.
It is surprising how many laws there are about making fuel/alcohol in US. I pretended to care about regulations and laws for my entire life, family was religious, then military half my life, couldn’t even get a sunburn because my body belonged to the federal govt. Can’t fish in my own pond, hunt on my land without a license… Sure ok. Now I’m like Fuck it and fuck you. If they want to raid my home for growing a pot plant, making shine, fishing in my own pond then come get some. I am sure they have better things to do like investigate a racist pull rope in a (nascar) garage. LOL
