Yeah seriously, I got a 2015 truck right before the chip crisis and it was even outdated in 2015 when it was made, really glad for that now. I don't need a fancy console. My friend was out shopping for a van this month and some of them already have the killswitches installed, she passed on those but it's made shopping harder in an already tight market.

I wonder if this the reason for all those 'cash for clunkers' programs too, trying to make the used car market tighter. If you want to get even more into the rabbit hole, could this kill switch implementation be part of what is holding up new car sales? I know a guy that works with chip design and production and he says there is no reason why existing USA factories were not quickly be switched to create the needed chips since that's easy to do and we have a lot of facilities here too, existing factories could be switched to making car chips and less important stuff like toys could be short on chips instead.

How did she know which ones already have the kill switches installed? Might be looking for a car soon and want to avoid these.

a quirkly shortcut is to try protesting your govt in CA and see if it turns off.

The dealership told her. I guess you'd have to ask, some of the same make and model had them and some didn't, from what we can tell. The dealership was trying to say it like it was a good thing to prevent theft.

Could you just disconnect your antenna?

It probably has an internal chip antenna. But no doubt it has a relay to turn off the car which could be bypassed. Probably also best to pull the power from the module to keep it from phoning home. The hard part is finding it

All chips post 2007 have a backdoor entry. You however can make a smart car "dumb". If you're willing.

Wouldn't something like an RF, wifi, bluetooth, or other signal detectors work? I've been thinking about this, but haven't really done the complete research or experiments to test it for myself.

Something like this?

This will still not prevent someone at Tesla from going full mental and having hundreds of thousands of Tesla cars drive 150mph into the SEC headquarters and flattening the homes of all SEC employees*.

*Note this is pure fantasy but could be within the realm of possibility--I think there was already a Hollywood movie that had this scenario, without the SEC.

And the information needs to be open source, especially on which chips to remove.
