Simultaneously, a certain group of people have been advocating the use of economic manipulation to stop people from eating meat and to make them give up driving, supposedly to save the environment.

The only difference in freedom between the US, Russia, and China is that you can drink on the streets while living in the latter two.

Really not. In Russia you will be fined if caught with alcohol (including beer) in the "public place" with exclusion of restaraunts and cafes. And even paper bag will not save you.

Fine is not large, but the whole process of arrest and delivery to police station for paperwork will destroy your day completely.

There are rumors that some people got fines by mail being catched on surveillance cameras, but I doubt it, since drinking non-alcoholic beverages on streets, in parks and other public places is not limited yet and hardly camera resolution allow to see if it is a beer of lemonade.

Street is also a "public place", suddenly. :)

"public place" is defined as a non-private place where other people have free access. Theoretically even forests and mountains fall under that definition.

That is not what in КОАП 20.20 written.

Потребление (распитие) алкогольной продукции в местах, запрещенных федеральным законом, - влечет наложение административного штрафа в размере от пятисот до одной тысячи пятисот рублей.

drinking alcohol in places prohibited by federal law will be fined from 500 to 1500 RUR.

Places defined in federal law N 487-ФЗ from Dec 30 2021.

Drinking of alcohol is prohibited in places listed in subsections 1-9 of section 2 of current article, and in other public places, including ....

Steet is just one of many "other public places".

Being younger had few arrests and fines for exactly drinking alcohol on the street. :)

I think you're dealing with Exhibit A on "how not to create a false-flag troll" here.

Anyway, in order to get a fuller picture of events, I'm interested in the Donetsk and Lugansk situation of the past eight years or so. After all, the official reason for the current operation are the claimed atrocities against ethnic Russians in the areas, leading to them declaring sovereignty. So, what's the deal there? Can you recommend any sources I can check up (in Russian is fine too)?

I know. Just look at all that expression, it's so obvious. :)

I'm interested in the Donetsk and Lugansk situation of the past eight years or so.

Shortly, Donetsk and Lugansk is coal mines region with mainly Russian-speaking population. Really, even Kiev is 50/50 Russian-Ukrainian speaking city. Coal mines and whole region was under the control of Donetskie bratva connected with Yanukovich. Stupid politics of new Ukrainian government of throwing out Russian language from the list of official languages and heavy antirussian propaganda allowed Donetskie to use Russian population discontent to declare independence and save their asses from Kolomoysky and others who obviosly pretend for that territory and wanted to exterminate concurrent gang in power. Since Donetskie had strong relationship with Russia (main coal buyer) Russia secretly support that independent region with weapons and finances. Eight years there was slow withstanding between Ukrainian army and DPR/LPR forces with periodic mutual shots, but without any active battles.

All that Ukrainian deal is carefully build on the natural dual-language nature of Ukraine. Russian-speaking population was continously segregated by one mean or another, and that finally create instability and hostility between two mixed parts of Ukrainian population. When you have tensions over all territory it is easy to use them for any shady purpose.

Of course LPR/DPR population got absolutely no any support and care nor from Russia, nor from Ukraine during all that 8 years.

Even now, when some part of LPR/DPR people become refugees, nobody really cares about them.

Russians never really needed for any power or government in exUSSR. Especially for Putin.
