Sadly a lot of the software engineering crowd has fallen VERY far from the old freedom loving days when the "internet" was a new thing... lots of clowns running around with purple hair on fire about "muh facism" and so on... its really puzzling and not sure how it got here from where it started.
Linux was originally a thing (along with other free unixes) because of fighting corporate fascism... I guess those days are over. The kids these days don't know the big corps they work for are working against them.
I really have a dislike for Linus.....he did two good things for the world and maintains them well enough. He likes to be a voice of opinions like he is more than a firmware geek....but I digress. He is just as fallible as the village idiot....as are we all. But his arrogance and demeaner perpetuate the stereotypes of a loner who is a little to into his own farts....
--
In fact I would argue his entire existence in the past decade plus to be antithetical to open Source and he is more of a problem than a solution.
No. Open source is literally how the patent system is supposed to work. The reason those 'big tech' companies exist is not because of open source....you don't know much about open source of you think that way.....try and program anything you idiot... honestly you opinion on this matter is worth less than dog shit.
--
What I mean is that anyone could make a clone - that doesn't make it big tech....it's big tech because of the oligarchy and the financial backing and control....open source....yeah...that's the problem. Fuck off with your nonsense.
Go get paid for your open source programming. Who is going to pay you? (Some big corp) How much? (A token amount, compared to the value of your work for them) And why? (So you can "own nothing and be happy")
Open source is about devaluing code and empowering the cloud. It's commoditizing the complement of the cloud. The cloud is all about total surveillance and centralization. Through vaccines, this includes expression of your genes and a remote off-switch for your body.
You do not know how to program. Maybe learn it ...
I would LOVE to see you write all the software in the world without using anyone elses code.
Go ahead....how many lives you have?
Seriously. You are being so dumb...so dumb...how about as an experiment....write a bare metal bootloader without anything except an Intel reference manual (4000+ pages of boring).... Then come back....because you haven't even got an OS yet...nor a kernel.... Nor anything.....
And you want everyone to do this ... Again....you are speaking outside your element....
Your article is a bit dated...it ignores all that has come because of open source and it literally is from the bitterness of the dot c crash..... It even mentions that it is beneficial to have consistent code for growth....so why don't a growth bad
...
Oh you mean because those companies 'added value'!!! Omfg!
Did you even read that article? The end of the article pretty much denies you....open source is good for business....because it commoditized the feature far all....so....you think....we should be stuck in the dark ages with the Wizards holding on the secrets of fire......because we don't want to accidentally commoditize the fire..... seriously...dumb.

Open source is communism. Developers work and don't get paid. Big tech uses their work to control the world and build a tyrannical world government.

What you wrote is indeed mindless.

You must be missing a second brain cell if you think someone with no experience would be linking you to a Joel Spolsky piece from 2002.

Bootloaders are fun and easy. Everyone should write one!

You are not expressing a coherent thought, except sniveling outrage because your pride is being belittled.
This is characteristic of open source zealots. One has to be unstable to waste one's talents for no pay. "I'm contributing to humanity!"
You're contributing to Google grinding us to dust. The technology we're creating is anti-human. The fire you praise will eat us.
If we survive the next few years, we need to slow down with technology to a halt, and rebuild a lot of it from scratch.
The breakneck "progress" is harmful and stupid. Do things slow. Do them many times over. One day, do things right.
They're both idiots clowns here tbh. Why does a discussion of COVID belong on a kernel mailing list?
It was while discussing the Kernel Summit's entry requirements
https://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/2106.1/04542.html
Because covid was used as an excuse to not do something they normally did previously.
