when the last great cataclysm happened (13 000BC ish) earth got very hot in a short amount of time. forest burned, ice melted, cold water filled the ocean cooling the planet. this lasted till 10 000BC when the ocean temp stabilized causing our climate to stabilize once again.
Humans probably sought refugee in deep underground caves and mountains while the world drastically changed. I bet those native people are talking about remerging to the new world we were left with
