One of theory is that they are Khazar descendants. Since it is unknown who Khazars was, it is hard to definitely prove or to disprove this theory.
Sefards seem to be "more Jewish", including the fact that sefards use more complex pronunciation of Hebrew.
Interesting that both, ashkenazi and sefards hardly have any strong historical or ethnical ties to Israel territory. Sefards as distinct etnicity formed in Spain (I don't remember their possible ancestors), ashkenazi formed somewhere in Eastern Europe (khazar refugees after Svyatoslav defeated Khazar kaganat). So, it is possible that judaism and Hebrew language is the only things that connects biblical Jews and modern ones. Also it is possible that biblical Jews really was distant ancestors to both sefards and ashkenazi but different ways of migration make them very different.
In any case modern Jews are very special etnicity with very specific religion and very big ambitions, with the idea that they are choosen ones to rule the world. It would be stupid to avoid Jewish question in the attempts to figure out how modern world really works.
Ok thanks, it's still confusing as I know nothing about jew history outside of the bible. I know someone who had ashkenazi jew show up in their ancestry dna test and they have no idea what that means as there are no known jews in the family tree going back very very far.
You could easily find Neandertal DNA sequences in most europeans, but that does not mean that somebody should know some ancestor who was Neandertal man. Also you could find sequences inserted by retroviruses and even ones with completely unknown origin, that attributed to aliens by some people. And you hardly find a virus or alien among known ancestors, even if tree going back very very far. Another question is what sequence is used in tests and how long how old and how selective is it.
