Reason #3 makes the most sense of all to me. More probability of profit for those shipping. Add to this they’re both Southern Hemisphere so there’s no cross seasonal goods needed.

You don't want to get stranded at sea, or have to station across Antarctica for fuel/weather. Notice how most long trips follow coast lines. Also this map doesn't look scaled right.

I always thought the ocean space there is too big and that it was possible there are some islands there which aren't on the map which they might want to hide from the general public.
