I use the yard to grow several varieties of dandelions. The leaves are great. I have a purple stem variant that is particularly good. Like its cousin, chicory, the roots can be dried and ground to make a coffee substitute. I haven't tried dandelion wine yet, but I might this year.
Fertilizer...collect some stinging nettle seeds and spread them around your neighborhood. They grow fast and everywhere, so you don't have to use your own garden to mass produce them. Anyway; harvest a bin full; submerge them in water; put a lid on it and 4-6 months later you got yourself a beast of a fertilizer. Get a bunch of neighbors to sacrifice some space for barrels or rain bins, and you all get endless fertilizer out of it. Seal them tho; because the odor is quite nasty.

Start with 2-year asparagus crowns. An asparagus plant can produce spears for up to 20 years.
Don't forget potatoes, they're easy and abundant.
Fruit trees. You can get dwarfs for limited space, or prune them often.
Citrus tree. Vitamin C and citric acid. Remember Waterworld? He had a lime tree on the boat.

Buried in this activity right now, I see the writing also. Thanks for the tips. I got an indoor rig set up and ready to go too.
