If like, a big chunk of the worldwide population see that this is a Cultural Revolution or Soviet Russia crisis (aka Change with the intent to bring forth existential death) they cannot sustain it for longer than a month.
This "Existential Death" part, unfortunately, is exactly what we are seeing here, and it could take a decade or more before people actually have the balls to tear down the wall. (Assuming if they do)
