I am somewhat skeptical of the idea that social media is as important as plumbing. If it really is that important, I believe that this is the real problem. We shouldn’t be so reliant on social media.
Social media is the modern day beer hall and town square or town hall for debate and discourse. You cant build your own. The oligarchs own the infrastructure and are working with the censorship groups, like ADL, to control and police it. Any start up that attempts to compete will be relentlessly hounded and smeared. If they do not die off from that onslaught, they will proceed to their advertising groups and remove all funding to them on grounds of racism or hate speech or promoting violence. If they still manage to persist, they will attack the ISPs and server hosts and force them to migrate endlessly until none left to host them. If they still manage to survive all this, they will delist them from the internet searches and get them removed from all mentions on any websites and relegated to extreme fringes at great expense to themselves and be utterly useless as a platform.
You cant build a new internet. You cant maintain hosting when they write laws against you in every country you attempt to host. You cant acquire bandwidth frequencies for cell towers and they will sue you for any frivolous patent they own to destroy a startup competitor in hardware. You will be required to hire hundreds of employees to police speech and thought if you want to participate in their game and even if you comply, they will crush you under boot.
They are literally using the agenda 230 stuff to destroy competitors while lobbying to maintain it for themselves. Free from consequences for us, fines and penalties for you.
You were almost forced to use social media. Employers were at one point considering the requirement that you have Facebook, but then "russia" happened, and everyone began deleting FB.
You need an email. It is increasingly difficult to get email from a place that is not one of the big software companies. Google has decided to not be neutral on politics, modifying their search engine to prevent things from coming up. Why should we trust them with our email? They might decide that because we don't like the hate-of-the-month that we should be banned.
This argument is like telling someone from the 60s that you don't have to use the mail or telephone system because if you wanted to talk to someone you could just drop by their house.
Ans the real problem is that our modern societal communication system was captured by private interests, and this was by design.
What we need is something equivalent to the USPS with protections on privacy and freedom of communication. This doesn't necessarily have to be a government entity, but its establishment as a public service and not a private enterprise is important.
