Well in the end it tells you that He doesn't die but rather lives forever in paradise with His bride, idk worth reading again probably. I would say the violence keeps most people away. In the before time, all the burbies (suburban dwellers) would spend the weekends in the city and tourists were always about but the crime is worse than ever and any protections there used to be have gone to the wayside.
