True! I discovered this years ago. I was searching and couldn't find a single topic which allowed me past 40-50 pages....it was such a sham. They are all duplicates...
I agree. I remember fondly searching around and discovering so much information and so many communities that were thriving and active but each unique and purposeful. The ads were barely there and if they were they were typify self hosted and directly managed.
The blogs (before the term was really a thing) were so much better. Hell...even the home websites on the universities were great....
IRC was a jungle and if you wanted to have DMs you could share your messenger or AOL....
Man I miss the golden internet. Centralisation ruined the culture of it.....that's what is missing in my opinion. A collection of cultures...now it's Echo chambers and monoculture everywhere. Even the wins kind of suffer because they feel like Reddit in a way.... monotonous
Agree wholeheartedly with this. You need to lead by example and offering outs at the beginning is weakening the whole argument.

I was tracking the data from JH and they were obviously working with China early because they had China's data available right away and they didn't bother to consider any sources except certain government ones at the onset even though they had a GitHub. I tried to track it but it was very clear after they kept changing the format that they wanted to focus on specific narrative in the media, but the data set was not concerned with accuracy because they were changing their stats tracked at a couple points.
They stopped updating a lot of data after a while and they made it look like US was outbreaking more but they just kept narrowing the data sets to more locations in the US but no where else around the globe.
I go off of the lockstep document and assume they know it will backfire and using that part of the plan.
But...we got a few years. They are still in the authoritarian stage.
