Could not agree with you more. To be a virtuous person means to live out your values even under difficult circumstances and this IMO is one example. The people being mislead and corrupted still have souls worth saving and if it wasn't for the brainwashing they experienced their whole lives would most likely have been good. I struggled early on after the election with this as well, I thought that "these sheep" being lead to their own slaughter was their own fault. And in no way do I alleviate them of all responsibility but I learned to be more understanding.
