Here's a paper from a year ago.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11795570/

The scientists who reviewed it said: holy fuck. That is an incredibly difficult case. That guy absolutely looked brain-dead and yet he was not.

Yeah. Nineteen years ago, something incredibly unusual happened. There have been 226 major lottery winners since then, but there's only one Zach Dunlap.

You only went looking for evidence to confirm your already existing belief. If you actually looked further you'd find this happens far more often and continues to this day. You'd find your oh so trusted sources like NPR and NYT reporting on the deficiencies and broken incentives of the system. You'd find confirmed testimony from nurses and surgeons that refused to operate when told the patient was "brain dead". You'd find papers and books by highly credentialed doctors who argue that brain death is nothing more than a fiction created by working backwards from the conclusion that organs must be harvested. You'd find the aborrent conduct of the representatives of organ procurement organizations bullying and coercing families stuck in a difficult emotional situation. You'd find the papers discussing why informed consent for organ donation is bad. You'd find that some of the same European countries whose doctors kill the most people do not even allow you to opt out of organ donation because your body belongs to the state and that some argue this should be the policy of the US.

The intellectual dishonesty in your hand waving this away is palpable.

Actually, I went looking for a review of the case, and I found one, and I linked to it.

And of course a brain can die. Starve a brain of oxygen long enough, and it dies and can't come back. Terri Schiavo's family refused to accept that obvious reality for fifteen fucking years, and created something of an abomination in the process. At least she didn't feel any pain or discomfort.

They assume its because incompetence when in fact it is deliberate. Continuance doses of sedatives tells the whole story and the doctor should be stripped of his license.

braindead

Dead isn't an affixed state but a moving process...brain/bhragno (to break) implies each living potential moving within the whole process of dying.

As usual...putting "brain" + "dead" together represents a synthesis tempting one to ignore that process (dead) separating potential (brain) implies analysis.

something happened that stopped everything

Everything cannot be stopped by something within it.

the movements witnessed by his relatives brought the process to a halt

A moving mind (movement) can neither halt nor witness the process dividing body and mind from one another.

the circumstances surrounding his brain-death determination

Determination binds ones free will of choice into surrounding circumstances. Notice furthermore...deter/deterrere (to frighten from, discourage from). The opposite of determination represents irresolution aka response (life) within solution (inception towards death).

they witnessed movements that changed the course of his story.

Storing within a story tempts one to ignore change while deceiving ones ability to witness movement. Course implies "onward movement"...stories tempts one into circular plots.
