Nostaliga aka nostos (return) + algos (pain)...it's returning (responding to a circle) which sustains pain longer during linear procession.
Both what others suggest as nostalgic to invoke sentiment (send into mind) and timed measurements (measuring mind) held onto are distorting ones perception within linear procession.

So Hofers mission to invert HEIMWEH (homesick) into NOSTALGIA (returning pain) just so happens to fall into the period of transition when operative masonry switched to speculative masonry.
