The tricky part is how to make it poly phase 3 or 4 phase (single phase starting)

Explanations of AC motors always gloss over this.

1.The Best Method: Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)A VFD is the most efficient and safest way to run a 3-phase motor on a single-phase supply. How it works: It takes single-phase AC power, converts it to DC, and then uses internal circuitry to synthesize a clean, adjustable 3-phase output.Benefits: It provides full motor torque, allows for speed control, and offers built-in motor protection.How-to: Wire your single-phase input (Hot and Neutral) to the L1 and L2 terminals of the VFD. Wire the 3-phase motor to the U, V, and W terminals on the VFD.

 2. The Budget Method: Static Phase Converter (Capacitor)This is a common DIY method for low-duty applications (like drill presses or saws) that does not require heavy startup torque. How it works: It uses a "run capacitor" to artificially shift the phase of the current on the third winding, tricking the motor into thinking it's on a 3-phase line.Downside: You will permanently lose about \(30\%\) to \(50\%\) of your motor's total running power and starting torque.How-to:Change the motor terminal box to a Delta configuration.Connect your single-phase power lines (Live and Neutral) to two of the motor's three terminals (e.g., U1 and V1).Connect a properly rated AC run capacitor (sized roughly at \(30 - 35 \text{ } \mu\text{F}\) per horsepower) between the V1 and W1 terminals.Moving the capacitor connection to a different terminal will reverse the motor's rotation.

 3. The Heavy-Duty Method: Rotary Phase ConverterIf you have multiple 3-phase machines or need to start heavy-load equipment (like air compressors) under a single-phase grid, you should use a rotary phase converter. How it works: It acts as an idler generator. It spins a 3-phase motor using single-phase power, which in turn generates the second and third phase legs natively.A Note on 4-Phase MotorsTrue 4-phase motors are exceptionally rare. If you have a stepping motor or a specialized 4-phase setup, the most reliable approach is to use a multiphase programmable controller (or a 4-channel VFD/driver board) that takes a single-phase 120V/240V input and outputs the specific, synchronized square waves or sine waves your 4-phase device demands to step or rotate properly.

#1 is a brush-less DC motor

Great ------ problem is, you still have to do a phase shift to start the single phase driver.

How it works: It uses a "run capacitor" to artificially shift the phase of the current on the third winding, tricking the motor into thinking it's on a 3-phase line.

Articles never explain the mechanics of how this works. Neither did this.

There are several methods to cause a phase lag to make single-phase act like rotational polyphase ---- by using capacitors, inductive coils, iron cores, permanent magnets etc. It's beyond the scope of this forum.

Creating the phase lag (several methods used) was the real genius of Tesla. It is not as simple as OP presents it. Tesla's genius is glossed over.

A simple example ---- if you charge a capacitor through a coil (inductor) it does not happen instantly, there is a delay. You have created a lagged phase, which can give rotational direction.

#2 is closer to what Tesla did . You gave no explanation o how it works.

The method is more like a 4 phase or a 90 degree two phase.

the induction motor

a) Motor/meue - "to push away" aka that which imparts (life) motion (inception towards death).

Sleight of hand... https://genius.com/Metallica-motorbreath-lyrics aka "Motorbreath, it's how I live my life...Once you have seen it, you'll never be the same"

b) Induction implies the introduction (inception) of being (life) pushed away (towards death)...

magnets

Magnet/mag - "to knead, fashion, fit" aka magis - "kneaded mass". Being implies elect (choice)...few tempt the choice of many into a kneaded mass (consensus) by attracting them to one another, which reduces the power of the elect among many (one choice) while increasing the power of the select among few (chosen one).

Few suggest electromagnetism to distract many from discerning self as elect tempted by mag-net...like networking on the internet.
