Windows 12 is scheduled for release in 2026 as a fully modular, partially subscription-based, AI-focused OS

While Windows 11, released in 2021, has yet to fully penetrate the world, there are rumors that the next generation, Windows 12, will be released in 2026. Windows 12 is expected to have AI as a core feature.

Based on leaked information and statements from hardware partners, technology media outlet PCWorld predicts that a new generation of Windows that goes far beyond a simple feature update to Windows 11 will be released sometime in 2026. One of the reasons for this is that Windows 10's extended security updates will end in October 2026 .

Windows 12 is reportedly codenamed 'Hudson Valley Next.' Its core feature is a modular architecture that allows for granular updates on individual features and services to suit a wide range of devices with different specifications.

With Windows 12, AI is expected to be built into the system, rather than treated as an add-on, evolving Copilot from an optional assistant to a centrally controlled instance .

Additionally, multiple leaks have revealed clear hardware requirements. A dedicated NPU with at least 40 TOPS of compute power is said to be required to fully utilize the system, and OEMs like Intel and AMD are labeling their new systems as 'Windows 12 Ready.' Devices without an NPU may not be able to use some AI features or may be excluded from the upgrade entirely.

The leaked information includes the phrase 'subscription status,' which suggests that additional cloud computing power and advanced AI features may be available as a subscription, but the traditional Home version of Windows will likely continue to be available as a one-time purchase.

It has also been reported that Windows 10 was still being used on 40% of PCs even just before support ended, highlighting its slow adoption.
