I've heard a theory (it might've been cited in an excerpt from the sci-fi novel Snow Crash, if I remember right) that the tower of babel was a sumerian ziggurat

Absolutely it was. The first few chapters of Genesis also depict a Temple. None of it can be understood unless you learn how the original audience heard it.
