I wonder if it has more to do with the cost of groceries doubling (or more) in the past few years. Harder and harder to justify the expense.
That said, I still have half a bottle of scotch that my best friend gave me. Friday and Saturday evenings I often think "I should have a glass" but then... I never do. I dunno.
It would be better if you had the humility to admit you have no possible way of knowing how many Americans this pertains to, but it's probably a contributing factor. (One among at least several others)
