If authority is truth then adherence is a good thing. Bad religion is blindly following false teachings. Bad science is also.
There are limitations to science because it describes a finite (limited) material world.
Knowing what those limitations are and why is the key to understanding science instead of fearing and hating it. I consider it a 'left-handed' knowledge and can be useful even though I'm naturally right-handed. To 'balance' the two forms of knowledge is key.
