I believe we are as much body as we are soul and mind and that the soul is immortal. So the soul isn't controlling you because the soul is you, it is the free will agent while the mind is the knowing and rational agent. The body is the physical agent that allows you to interact with the world, the vehicle for the mind and the soul.

What else would be the "I"? It surely is not just the body because you can loose parts of your body and still retain your identity. So it has to be something metaphysical like the mind and the soul.
