God making us in his image means our Spirit. This body is like a car and is actually the opposite of God's image. Our Spirit deep down inside is perfect and that is the true self. Being "reborn" in Spirit just means realizing that you aren't the body but the Spirit. This leads to salvation since it's like coming out of the insanity of thinking you are just a body.
