Local elections do still appear to matter though (for now).
I'm actually a big advocate of local elections, including your Sheriff (who has discretion on which laws to enforce). Local elections are far more likely to have an impact on your life than federal elections and are far less likely to be rigged (but not 100% proof if the stakes are high enough).
In my lifetime, I've seen no concrete evidence indicating that choosing one presidential candidate over another has any effect on anything.
