It really is in the hands of the population of the West as to whether there will be a WW3. Putin knows the crisis is coming. Russia and her allies are making preparations and will fight to the end if it comes to that, but that path is not of their choosing:

All these things we are seeing are outward confirmations of the choice the Western "leaders" have made. However, They would never deign to stir up the peasantry with such news. It really just comes down to, "Suppose they gave a war and nobody came?"
Well, you know, it all has to do with "being a good person".
Virtually everyone thinks of themselves as a "good person", then proceeds to do whatever it was they were going to do anyway.
Thinking this through, "being a good person" means "doing a good deed for the right reasons, then expecting for the right reward".
Really thinking this through, though, "being a good person" actually means "doing a good deed even if you know you're going to get kicked in the teeth for your trouble".
Not many people are ready for that. The ironic thing is, if enough people were, I believe there would quickly be a lot less teeth-kicking in the world. It's painful to have to watch it all drag out.
