Literally every Point-of-Sale interface anywhere—and I mean anywhere—I go these days asks for a freaking tip, even when it doesn't make sense. The POS (apropos acronym) asked me for a tip the other day at the mechanic's, which is new. I won't be surprised if grocery stores and gas pumps start doing it, too.
I think I’ve seen pictures of gas pumps doing it, but never in real life myself. I use cash at the pump, anyway. It has become annoying lately due to even my local (99.9% white city) switching to “pay before” software, but at least no “tips.”
Only in the last two years. There are a couple of places around here that still allow it, but most have switched over to “pay before.” This, of course, also incentivizes people to stop using cash in order to force a fully digital currency down our throats.
That's crazy, I think I've paid for gas using cash once in my life because it's always been so inconvenient.

Not just that, it makes gas stations more bold with price gouging. With pay-after-filling pumps people could just drive the fuck away if prices were unreasonable. Now that everyone physically has to pay first they just set the price to whatever the fuck they want. Oy vey, you don't want to pay $4.50 while the surrounding region is only $3? Sorry goy, guess you're not driving anywhere.

How recent? As a zoomer I've never seen a pump that let you fill before paying.
