If I am not mistaken that is the show where a game can literally kill people if you die from it and once you joined you cannot run.
I can't think of a single realistic scenario where it would come close to this, but the villains there would make a nice allegory for our enemies.

Sword Art Online is infested with plebians and cowards destroying great heroes and rape-murdering them with pleb tactics. Sorta like what they did to us now but much more unsuccessful. Search Nobuyuki Sugou to get a good idea.
