The contract between the US govt and ICANN to use it as a captive service ended some time ago and ICANN became a corporation. But at some point Obama set in motion mechanisms to sell off to some global entity, I am not clear on details of that without digging. All I know is it will happen in Oct 2024 unless legislation to block it happens. That will not happen under the OBiden regime however so I don't know where this will go. I read an analysis today but cannot find again. Still searching, will update.
