Does anybody have an explanation for why I'm able to see boats 31 miles from the shore when they should be over 500 feet below the horizon?

Inter-dimensional aliens crashed into Miami because they used earth satellite GPS, which only works on the surface of the Earth, and they got the numbers backwards (d'oh!), naturally resulting in 10 foot tall beings, which were not able to be videotaped, walking around Miami, during a riot...
