Reddit is worse, a tonne of stuff is just auto shadow banned, specifics sites, words, phrases etc. For example if you use the word stupid or retarded your comment will be shadow banned.
Yeah, after being a redditor for over 11 years, a few years ago I was banned in a subreddit that I seldom went to for something innocuous I said in a different subreddit. I knew then it was time to go.
Reddit went to shit when all of the refugees came over from Digg.
That's okay because I was frequenting more of thedonald.win at the time. At any rate, I now hang out on the various .wins.
Many of the thread have little to no interaction most days. Then someone reads a comment like that, interaction goes up slightly for a short time. A few days ago all the effort was on r/conspiracy, there was a thread about it. When that happens go to the drama sites. Empty.
Dailydot, and Boredpanda have to go back in the archives to material when ever this happens. It's been happening a whole lot recently.

Getting down voted is not the same as being site banned. Also, I'd argue it counts as discourse.
