I’m not sure why it does this sometimes. I tried to open a proton mail and got this same link. I didn’t wanna do that so abandoned it. Came back later and it didn’t ask me. Opened it without any issues. And did another one at a later date also without having to provide a verification email.
The hard part is not having your private email server marked as an untrusted spam generator by the major email relays. You will never know which of your emails just get black holed.
And of course there is the never ending war against incoming spam. I gave up fighting these battles years ago.
Yeah I started using simple login email aliases and I don’t think I’ve had an issue with them being black holed but it is hard to tell sometimes. I figure if it’s important I’ll notice it’s missing and if not, it’s no big loss.
Yeah I always use a vpn and I run nextdns dns filter. I was using both when it asked and also when it didn’t ask. Not sure if I was on the same vpn server or not
I’m using adguard vpn right now. It’s tough to know who to trust but also my threat level is low and I have it mainly for privacy from my isp. If you’re trying to hide from the govt or something then I’m sure you’re gonna need something more than a basic off the shelf vpn
Today, to rise up your own e-mail server is much simplier than to pass all that captchas, checks, 2FA and other bullshit, completely unnecessary for e-mail to work, on any fucking public e-mail services.
Those who whinning about "public e-mail privacy" and who didn't bother to start their own e-mail server years ago are just lazy hypocrites, who do not deserve any privacy at all.
From $10/y for cheapest VPS and domain. If you have normal provider, who are hot hesitate to give you constant IP and set reverse DNS record, your own computer (starting from Raspberry PI) at home could be used. So, at minimum you have only domain name to pay. Free domain names are not a good idea, since you have a nonzero chance to suddenly lost it without any notification.
Buying VPS and domain names do not require any acknowledgement of info you provide and could be paid with crypto. Of course if you are smart enough to not use all that AWS/Hetzner/Yahoo/wharever corporation crap.
and any guides for it?
Tons of howtos around. Most popular SMTP servers are Postfix, Exim, Courier-MTA. For each you will find numerous howtos and examples on how to setup and run it. All free and opensource.
Also, there are numerous howtos and forums on buying cheap hostings and domains like lowendtalk.com and others where you could find nice offers and discounts.
I find it funny that the correct reply to yours is downvoted and the one making it sound impossible and overly expensive is upvoted. I guess they really dont want people using their own email server.

We're you using vpn? Many services don't ask unless you're behind something like that.

Curious what VPN you were using. Israel is buying up all the major vpns (surfshark, nord, express). I wouldnt trust any VPN

Awhile back a considerable amount of VPNs merged with the buying entity being Israeli intelligence. I no longer trust any vpns
