You dumbass. That's a navigational instrument. They probably used one to determine that they had arrived at the south pole. If not, they used one to find their way there.

The 2011 bronze commemorative marker located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica demonstrates blatant symbolism in the shape of a Freemasonic square and compass. The National Science Foundation (NSF) explains this marker commemorates 100 years since the arrival of Amundsen's 5 man team at the Geographic South Pole.
