Ahhh gotcha. They fear they're gonna fuck up yet-uncovered ruins and artifacts with the big boring machine.
Not even going extra deep would help because it's assumed to have started as a burial site. Going around would be cheaper, and easier. So... I think this is an excuse to look to something.
