Yes, Mesmerism is not the same as hypnotism.

Also, people's suggestibility (to hypnotic efforts) / susceptibility to mesmeric influences varies a lot.

A decent modern intro to differences of technique, methods and pathways between the two is Modern day Mesmerism by Lee Gerrard-Barlow.
