Now the hand of the Lord was heavy on the Ashdodites, and He ravaged them and smote them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territories.

The thing was probably radioactive. I wouldn't be surprised if Israel was just used in a proxy war between 2 technocivilizations, and all of the amazing wonders were due to primitive people not understanding technology.
